Diane's newest addition to the star quilt gallery features snow white stars in each of the eight points of the star, and also in the four cardinal directions.  Colorful three-quarter stars bend around each of the four corners.  This wonderful creation is done mainly in a deep, rich burgundy fabric, along with snow white, taupe, chocolate, and midnight black.  Among some tribes, white is the color of the north direction, where the powers of healing medicines come from.

Mother Earth's Star Quilt

If Mother Earth were to make herself a star quilt, this would be it.  Needing a star quilt for her wedding, but unsure about what colors she wanted, one of Diane's customers was inspired by a vison that unfolded before her at the beach:  Gold in the earth behind her, shades of green in the trees and in the grasses beneath her feet, the sandy beach just ahead, the graduated hues of blue stretching out into the ocean, and a brilliant and colorful sunset far out on the horizon.  The star is flanked on all four sides by medicine wheels and eagle feathers.

This version of the Healing Medicine star quilt has a Monet blue star with snow white stars inside the main star and also in the outer blue borders.  The complimenting colors are deep red, gold, and black.  The star is on a white background.  The photo shown is of a full size 60" X 75" quilt (about the size of a queen size mattress) with Indian hand quilting, which sells for $605.  Click on it to see how beautiful it is.

Finally, an End Of The Trail star quilt!  The famous End of the Trail design is appliqued in the center of a star that has luscious earth colors of sand, beige, cream, white, brown, and black.  The design features hand quilting around it.  Four eagles soar in each corner of the quilt, and there are slanted-stripe triangles along the top and bottom edges of the quilt.   This wonderful star quilt is predicted to be a collector's item some day.

All tribes have special hunters.  These men and women are known all across the reservation for their superb game hunting skills.  The Hunter's Star Quilt was made as a gesture of honor and respect for these members of the tribe who feed not only their own families, but other families in the tribe who have a need. Medicine wheels and eagle feathers are on all four sides of the border.  Colors in the 60" star are hunter green, kelly green, forest green, spry green, burgandy, yellow, gold, brown, copper, and dark red, all on a taupe (tan) background.  The border is hunter green and burgandy.

Diane's unique method of cutting and sewing the fabric pieces in the star of this quilt create a stunning whirlwind effect. This star quilt has a row of bears at the top and bottom; the queen size can have bears on all four sides. The bear is symbolic of healing, and sacred medicines.

Buffalo Prairie Star Quilt

The late summer prairie, and the sacred buffalo that live in this beautiful place, are represented by the earthy hues of 10 different colors. The background is a pale shade of peach. A circle is formed all around the central star by making a second star that is split and has its colors rearranged. Four smaller half-stars are placed in the corners.

"Mitakuye Oyasin" says "All my relatives" in the Lakota language. In its most basic form, it means that we are acknowledging our sacred connectedness to all things in the Universe--humans, animals, rivers, trees, rocks, stars, everything. This quilt has a unique spiral design that symbolizes this beautiful, powerful ideology. Diane wishes to credit Jan Krentz and her fabulous book, "Lone Star Quilts and Beyond," for the inspiration that led to the creation of this quilt.
