Diane's Native American Star Quilts

All quilting styles are good. It's just a matter of personal taste.

European Hand Quilting for your Star Quilt

European Style Hand Quilting

This style of hand quilting is elaborate and may take several weeks to finish. Quilting thread that closely matches the fabric color is generally used.

Indian Hand Quilting for your Star Quilt

Lakota Style Hand Quilting

Click on the photo at left to see a large photo of the Green Ravens Star Quilt with Indian style hand quilting.

This is the style of hand quilting that's traditional to the Lakota people and to other plains Indians such as the Cheyenne.  Arching fans are hand-stitched in overlapping circles, forming an overall design that looks like clouds flowing across the quilt.

Machine Quilting for your Star Quilt

Sewing Machine Quilting

Sewing machine quilting involves straight-line stitching throughout the quilt, although the stitching sometimes follows the outlines of designs, such as the feathers and medicine wheels in the quilt shown. Invisible quilting thread is used on the top of the quilt, and cotton thread is used on the bottom.

Hand Tying for your Star Quilt

Old Style Hand Tying

This is the oldest and fastest method of finishing a quilt top. Hand tying involves taking a stitch through all layers of the quilt using crochet twine, then tying the twine in a knot on top of the quilt. Knots are approx. 4 to 5 inches apart.
