Very Special Star Quilts

Sometimes something very special happens for an artist.  It may happen when they are in the planning stage of a piece of art, or it may happen after they are already at work on it:  Seemingly from out of the blue, the artist will suddenly receive a full vision in their mind, a clear image of what they will ultimately create...  What they MUST create.  Driven by this inner vision, the artist cannot put the work away until it is finished.  When the work is done and the artist finally steps back, they see their creation as if for the very first time and they are surprised, stunned, and awed by the beauty, depth, and complexity of what they have just produced.  In a hushed and humble voice of wonder, the artist can only tell his or her admirers, "It really wasn't me who did this; I don't know who it was, but it wasn't ME."

Native Americans will tell you that this creative vision comes from a higher power, that it is purely spiritual in nature, that it is a gift from God, or Grandfather.   It is said that at this time the artist's Spirit is carried into a sacred space beyond the physical, and that the presence of other Spirits may be all around who have come to guide or lend support. 

When it happens that a Native American star quilt maker has such a spiritual vision, her star quilt will come together without effort.  The pieces will fall into place like magic, and the fabric and the colors will choose themselves, sometimes in unusual and interesting ways, and sometimes with sacred meanings.  It can take a very very long time to finish this special star quilt, as the visions seem to come in pieces over time, in dreams, in wakeful states, unexpectedly at almost any time, in fact.

The star quilt maker may not know yet who the recipient of this beautiful creation will be.  But she does know one thing:  Wherever this star quilt will ultimately go, to what person, at what date, to what place...  It is destined, it is meant to be, and the very special star quilt will go exactly where it was intended to go by God, the Creator.

 

Diane has been very fortunate to be blessed with such visions from time to time, and they are seen in the Very Special Star Quilts offered here.  These star quilts are made entirely in a ceremonial way with prayers and smudging of sweetgrass and sage.  Some of these quilts are still in the planning/working stages.  Some of them are already finished and await going to their special owners, to the one person for whom each star quilt was made.
